Firewalls Architectures in the Public Cloud Presentation at VANUG
In September I had the opportunity to speak at the Virginia Network Users Group (VANUG). My presentation--entitled Firewalls Architectures in the Public Cloud--was aimed at giving the audience insights into how to use firewalls to protect workloads in the cloud. In addition to covering design patterns across AWS, Azure, GCP and OCI, the presentation covered ancillary issues related to deploying firewalls in the cloud.
The most important take-aways from the presentation are as follows:
- Protecting cloud workloads with firewalls requires in-depth knowledge of the CSP's networking stack
- Knowledge of firewall configuration from the data center does carry over to cloud virtual appliances
- Complexity associated with inspection designs makes automation a requirement, not a nice-to-have
